India reaffirms commitment to ensure a cleaner & sustainable planet on World Environment Day

World Environment Day is observed every year on the 5th of June to raise global awareness to take positive environmental action to protect nature and the planet Earth. India reaffirms commitment to ensure a cleaner & sustainable planet on this day.

Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar today planted a sapling in Paryavaran Bhawan in New Delhi on the occasion of World Environment Day. Mr Javadekar said, people must plant a sapling to save the environment and to get the fresh air. 

He welcomed the decision of Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari of planting 125 core trees along the Highways in the country. He said, every citizen can plant eight saplings towards saving the environment. 

Minister of State in the Environment Ministry Babul Supriyo asked people to plant a sapling and inspire others also to do so today and every day. 

Former cricketer Kapil Dev and Actors Jackie Shroff and Randeep Hooda also planted separate saplings on the occasion at Paryavaran Bhawan. Mr Dev said, media has a responsibility to create awareness on the importance of planting trees to save planet earth.

In Tamilnadu, a mammoth campaign for planting 50,000 saplings is being implemented from today, as part of World Environment Day. The programme, being implemented in association with Isha Yoga Foundation based in Coimbatore, aims at increasing the green cover and awareness about environmental issues. The saplings are being planted in city areas like Coimbatore, Madurai, Trichy, Thiruvannamalai etc.
          
In Trichy, special awareness programme has been conducted by Water Foundation also. The rally, distribution of pamphlets and flags were held as part of the programme.
